The Westside, so named because it lies west of State Street, is comprised of two separate neighborhoods, the "lower" Westside and the "upper" Westside, also known as the Cottage Hospital area. City Hall recognizes the Westside as the oldest established residential area in town: six out of ten houses were built prior to 1940. Cottage Hospital and its surrounding laboratories, rest homes, professional buildings, clinics and other medically-oriented satellites comprise the most important economic segment of the Westside.

The cottages of the Westside include a variety of architectural styles. Here the density is greater than in other neighborhoods, as the standard size of lots on the Westside are 50' x 100'.
